first-lessonUsing the parking brake / handbrake is something that we will show you how to use, when to use it and when not to use it. Some students that come to us from other driving schools don’t have a clear understanding of using the parking brake.

We will teach you that when your vehicle is stationary or parked for a period of time you should normally apply your hand brake.

When you’re stopped at traffic lights or queuing behind other vehicles apply the hand brake and put your vehicle into neutral. You do this if you think you’re going to be there for a longer period than a few seconds i.e. 10 seconds or more, otherwise you do not need to use it here.

carThe reason for using it here is that your foot could easily slip off your footbrake if for example your shoes are wet or if another vehicle hits you from behind.

This would then send your car into the car in front if you or perhaps a pedestrian walking in front of your vehicle. Applying the handbrake minimises this from happening leaving you safe and other vehicles and pedestrians safe.

You can also use your handbrake on helping you take off on a hill. We will teach you how to use this effectively on a hill start so your vehicle doesn’t roll back on you into another vehicle when you’re releasing the footbrake and the handbrake.

Leaving A Safe Gap

On this note it is always important to leave a safe gap from the vehicle in front of you while queuing especially on a hill as this will allow some room if the vehicle ahead of you starts to roll back while trying to move off.

Leaving a safe gap is something that is of the utmost importance and you will learn to do this forever while driving.
