On your first few driving lessons with us your pass my test driving instructor will take you through such things as the gearbox in the vehicle, how to use it and what it’s used for.
Your gearbox contains the gears that control the relationship between the engine speed and your road speed.
There are usually 5/6 gears and your first gear provides the greatest force at the driving wheels and this is the gear you will use each time to move off.
As you progressively speed the vehicle up you change up to a higher gear with each gear giving you less gear force but more road speed. When you reach top gear i.e. forth or fifth gear these provide the least force but give the highest road speeds.
Choose Pass My Test for your Driving Lessons Rathcoole
Along with your normal 4, 5, or 6 gears you will also have reverse gear which will allow you to reverse your vehicle.
When no gear is selected this is called neutral and your gear lever will usually spring back into the neutral position in the middle of the gear system which we will show you how to do.
Your clutch links the engine to your wheels through the gearbox and allows the gradual connection of the engine to the wheels.
Gears Forming an H
The usual way in which the gears are formed are in the shape of a H while reverse and fifth usually form an additional I.
There is a safety mechanism in your gearbox so that you can’t select reverse by accident while driving. As mentioned before the gear lever automatically springs back into neutral when no gear is selected.
Third and forth gear are usually lined up and this tendency of the gears lining up with particular gears in known as bias.
We will teach you never to look down as you are changing gears and on your very first driving lesson we will have you practicing this so that you know where the gears are and so you don’t ever have to look down to see where the gears are.
You are in safe hands with us and one thing is for sure is that when you take your driving lessons with Pass My Test you will become one seriously good driver that will have no problem passing the driving test when it comes up.
