Getting Started

First and foremost you must apply to the Driver Theory Test Centre to sit your Driver Theory Test.
This is a test whereby you will be asked questions on the rules of the road etc. on a computer. The Theory Test exam covers areas such as:

  • The rules of the road
  • Risk perception
  • Eco-driving
  • Hazard awareness
  • Good driving behaviour.

You can get a list of all the questions in the Official Driving Theory Test book or CD-Rom available in any good bookstore or on the internet.

2. Book By Telephone

Call 1890 606 106 (Lo-call rate). To talk to a service representative and they will book your test and confirm your appointment.

Note: Please have a credit / laser card and your PPS number available.

For C (Bus) and D (Truck) tests, please also have your driving license number available.

3. Postal Applications

They are also available at Driver Theory Test Centres and Motor Taxation Offices.

On completing your application send it to the Driver Theory Test, PO Box 788, Togher, Cork (Please do not send your application form to the Driver Theory Test Centre)

Postal applications for a learner permit should be sent to the Motor Taxation Office in your city/county of residence. For further information please visit www.transport.ie

Once your application has been received, you will be notified with the date, location and time of your test in advance. If you need to reschedule your theory test, contact the call centre above.

Important:

All your documentation will be checked on arrival at the test centre. Make sure you have photo identification with you, such as a passport, student identity card or Garda identity card.
